It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the skeeter patrol
Sentinel staff REPORT June 17, 2003

South County residents who spot a helicopter hovering around Watsonville Slough, Hanson Slough, Lake Tynan or Pinto Lake today should not be alarmed.

Beginning at 7 a.m., the Santa Cruz County Mosquito and Vector Control will release biological chemicals to help control mosquitoes, thus the spread of diseases including the West Nile Virus, first discovered in the United States in 1999.

Most people infected with the virus, which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, do not become ill. Mild symptoms include fever, headache and body aches. More severe symptoms can occur in the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

The virus is expected to reach California this summer.

"The mosquito-control granules are not toxic to humans and are environmentally safe," said Paul Binding, control district manager. "They’ve been approved by the World Health Organization for use in drinking water. This is not your father’s pesticide."

The district has three mosquito population agents. While two kill mosquito larvae and spread to other mosquitoes, one actually stops the larvae from aging.

"It keeps them alive for the food chain, but prevents them from reproducing," Binding said.

The spraying should wrap up by 11 a.m., he said.

People can protect themselves from mosquitoes by installing screens on their homes, using bug repellent on their bodies and emptying standing water sources, Binding said.

The control board, meanwhile, has mailed out questionnaires to residents outside the district, asking how bad their mosquito problem is and whether they would be interested in receiving the district’s services. This is part of the district’s proposal to introduce a ballot measure that would ask voters whether the district’s services should be offered countywide.

Right now, the district serves the area from Aptos to Pajaro at a cost of about $11 per single-family residence. Binding said that amount would decrease with added customers.

The district’s services are funded through property taxes.
