Is the tsunami aftermath a “window of
opportunity” for bolstering the Pentagon’s presence in Southeast Asia?
The Thai people reject the proposed build-up of the American military at
Utapao air base and in the Gulf of Thailand. The tragedy of the natural
catastrophe in the Indian Ocean should not serve as a pretext for
strengthening the U.S. military presence in the region.

The Pentagon has announced it is returning to its old
Vietnam War haunts at Utapao Royal Thai Naval Air Force Base 90 miles
south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. In this clear escalation of the
American military presence in Southeast Asia, the ostensible plan is to
set up a “command center” for the tsunami emergency relief effort. Utapao
air base will serve as a staging base for U.S. military and rescue
aircraft. The emergency relief operations appear to provide a windfall
opportunity for beefing up the American military presence in Southeast
Asia, part of the expanding Pentagon strategy of "forward positioning,"
establishing sites, so-called “air cargo hubs,” where American forces can
stash equipment and enter and leave as desired.
During the Vietnam
War, Utapao functioned from April 1967 as a major staging base for B-52s
carrying out bombing raids over North Vietnam, and KC-35 stratotankers of
the Strategic Air Command. Many American GIs served there [1].
Despite Thailand's neutrality on the war in Iraq, Thai Prime
Minister Thaksin Shinawatra allowed Utapao to be used by American
warplanes flying into combat in Iraq last year, and into Afghanistan
earlier. There is also speculation that Utapao, with its infamous
facilities for ‘sophisticated interrogation’ (a holdover from the Vietnam
era), is probably where various al-Qaeda suspects have been secretly
grilled.
The command center will be largely operated by the 3rd
Marine Expeditionary Force. The naval air base, also now functioning as a
local airport, is located a short drive from the tourist mega-center of
Pattaya, whose roots also go back to the Vietnam era. The U. S. Navy is
also dispatching the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and the USS
Bonhomme Richard expeditionary strike group to the immediate area offshore
[2].
Is all this military redeployment to bolster ‘humanitarian
aid’ efforts? The Thai people reject a build-up of the American military
at Utapao air base and in the Gulf of Thailand. In this hour of calamity,
they are grateful for all support -- but not when tethered to a huge
reentry by the Pentagon onto Thai soil. The tragedy of the present havoc
in the Indian Ocean should not serve as a pretext for strengthening the
U.S. military presence in this disaster-striken region.

The seismic detection bouys could have given warning a
few hours before the wave hit and enabled enough people to evacuate,
preventing loss of life..
Call me paranoid, but it almost seems
like the US government (and their overseas puppets) place people in harms
way, wait for the inevitable disaster, than look like heroes when they
rush in to save the day..
Disaster relief agencies like Red Cross
are well funded and await disasters of great magnitude like the recent
tsunami to start another fund raising campaign..
Most of the
expensive coastal development was for wealthy tourists anyway. Simple
traditional "indigenous" structures from palm leaves, bamboo and such are
common along tropical coastal regions and don't require any lost cost if
they are swept away by a tsunami or seasonal typhoon..
Planet Earth:The Latest Weapon of War by world renown
scientist Dr. R. Bertell tells it all! I read it and it is shocking to
find out what the US military has been doing.
Even US secretary of
Defense William Cohen let it out of the bag in April of 1997. "...eco-type
of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes,
volcanoes REMOTELY through the use of ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES..."
Look
up HAARP(electromagnetic waves usage) and find out that tetonic plates can
be manipulated!)
Your paranoia and conspiracy-laden nonsense is about the
most hysterical crap I've seen lately. Blame it on the US!! Bushitler!
Halliburton! Go back to your cave.
Thanks for pointing out the HAARP connection. It is very
credible and this technology is being used for political purposes by the
US government. Michael Ruppert describes its use against his home by the
government in Crossing the Rubicon. It is believed that this was the
weapon used by the government to shoot down the plane on 9/11/01 over
Pennsylvania, as Ruppert more fully describes his book (the electricity in
an elementary school in the area went out for a while, caused by this
technology). It was also used to create a phony electrical crisis one
August sometime between 2001 and this year (I simply forget exactly which
August) to pass a pro-Bush profiteering bill. The power outtage shut down
New York City and much of the northeast for a day or so.
Capitalism is in a great crisis, or as Ruppert calls it, the
decline of the American empire. These are acts of desperation of a dying,
but still dangerous, beast. There is no low to which the capitalists will
not stoop to maximize their profits, their primary concern at all times.
Our response must be a labor movement capable of calling a general strike.
Thanks to Portland Indymedia, I have learned about an
article by Michel Chossudovsky, "The Ultimate Weapon of Mass
Destruction:"Owning the Weather" for Military Use" on the excellent
website of the Center of Research on Globalisation, at:
ttp://http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO409F.html
It covers the HAARP connection and much more.
I would like
to urge this website have, like Portland's has, a 9/11 Truth Movement
Feature page, so that the SF Bay Area readers become more aware of the
nature of the government we have. Global Research is part of the 9/11
Truth Movement and has much food for thought on its website.
As
other articles on Portland's Indymedia website point out, the Aceh
independence movement and the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka were opposed by US
oil imperialism and its local lackeys. This catastrophe murdered millions
of these movements' supporters. Of course, no one can turn back the clock
of history, but we cannot move forward without a labor movement.
For more in Sri Lanka, see 12/29/04 World Socialist Website which
has correspondents in Sri Lanka, "Sri Lankan Victims Speak to the WSWS"
with color photos at:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/dec2004/sril-d29.shtml
The amount of energy released by the Aceh earthquake on
Sunday was probably equivalent to at least that of thousands of
thermonuclear bombs. (I'm not knowledgeable enough to say whether it would
be like 5,000 or 100,000 such bombs.) While human action could
theoretically trigger such an earthquake, it could only do so if that much
energy had been stored up due to the deformation of tectonic plates
rubbing against each other. In such a case, that human intervention would
perhaps cause the earthquake to happen earlier (or later) than it would
have happened otherwise, but it wouldn't noticeably affect the magnituted
of the quake. So the obvious question is, why would the U.S. military have
wanted this quake to occur at this time, rather than a few weeks, months
or years later, even if they benefitted from it? I can't see any reason.
While I don't doubt that the War Department uses its trillions of
dollars for all kinds of projects, some of which do tremendous
environmental damage and destabilize the planet's ecology, I don't see any
reason to believe that an organization that can't capture a small Iraqi
city can manipulate earthquakes and hurricanes in ways that would make
them useful as weapons. Or do people think that Grenada, Florida and
Alabama are prime targets of the Pentagon, and not just Aceh and the Tamil
region of Sri Lanka?
BTW, where does anonymous "Socialist" get the
idea that the earthquake/tsunami killed "millions" of supporters of the
Aceh independence movement and the Tamil Tigers? The death toll in Aceh
was estimated at around 60,000 by a supporter of Aceh independence on
"Democracy Now!" on Wednesday. The death toll in Sri Lanka is in the tens
of thousands. Absolutely nobody with any credibility has suggested a total
death toll -- everywhere -- of much over 100,000. Of course, outbreaks of
epidemic diseases could greatly increase that number, and that is what we
must struggle to prevent by getting sufficient aid to the affected
regions.
We have here another case of anonymous irresponsibility,
i.e., somebody anonymously posts something ridiculous (for whatever
motive) without -- because they are anonymous -- having to worry about
being made to look the fool.
It is even worse. The Pentagon caused the tsunami so
that they could justify the intervention.
It was the Pentagon that caused the tsunami so that
they could have an excuse for the intervention.
Then it is not only the Pentagon which can do those
things. In the case of the Pinatubo there must have been the Filipinos,
who wanted the base closed.
Do you rembember a flood in Algeria about two years
ago? Do you know what? Now some CIA agents are hunting for terrorists in
the south of that country. Do you think it is a coincidence?
No.
It has been know that two CIA agents were in Algiers when the disater took
place.
What were they doing there and why they are in the
country?
Obviously, there are thousands dead and there are
millions who are homeless. This is simply a typographical error. The
impact is certainly very great. I suggest Aaron read the Global Research
article at http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO409F.html
.
I also suggest he read all the rest of the Global Research site
as it is loaded with all kinds of information, often from a socialist
perspective.
There would be no Indymedia websites if most of us
could not be anonymous, and Aaron knows this. Please get off your high
horse and do your homework. Read the above article, and while you are at
it, read Crossing the Rubicon by Michael Ruppert and The 9/11 Commission
Report: Omissions & Distortions by David Griffin. Clearly, Aaron needs
to read more.
The reason for all of the capitalist class' actions
is the same: to maximize profits for the capitalist class.
If I was inclined to arrive at conspiratorial conclusions
based on a tissue of evidence, I would say that "Socialist" is a CIA
operative who's objective is to make socialists look like boobs.
It is not possible but a real fact. Do you remember
what happened in Central America when the last earthquake took place? Some
days before the earthquake, four American Socialists were spotted there
and look what happened. Even more, later on those Socialists were known to
be CIA agents.
It cannot be a coincidence that those CIA
Socialists were in the very spot where an earthquake would ocur two days
afterwards.
If so, whom is it against?
There's no real way to
tell from the wording. It borders on gibberish. What *are* you trying to
say here? Try again.
silly.
read again, and decide if you wish to point an
arrow dipped in poison&koolaid at the obvious target.
It sounds like gibberish. What did you mean to say? Try
again.
it wasn't much of a directed joke anyway.
Could you please try to make sense here in the future?
Please?
can you read, idiot?
like i said, NEVER mind. if you
cant read for yourself than keep on keepin on,
Were HAARP or ELF transmissions to blame?
Pros:
1.Southeast Asia, with it's thousands of tiny islands and large
indigent Muslim population,is my prime pick for where Osama is currently
located. No one would turn him in,and he would be just another millionaire
who owned his own island, making satellite detection hard. And even if
Osama's not around,
2.There's still that very large Muslim
population, and I'm sure Diego Garcia was feeling mighty isolated all by
itself surrounded by Muslims. There have been several failed revolutions
with the intention of bringing all of S.E. Asia under unified Islamic
rule, creating a new superpower with about half a billion people.Faced with
this prospect,it's entirely feasible our leadership may have decided to
"thin the herd"(they've made equally callous decisions about their own
citizens)especially with a massive display of godlike power. The US would
use that to send the old "my god is bigger than your god" message to the
Muslim world, since so many of the neo-crusaders believe it.
3.The
disparity in response times between the civilian warning system and the
military relief. The warning system that was set up FOR THIS PURPOSE failed
to give adequate warning, yet before a day had passed we already had
dispatched two carriers to dispense aid in the region(wanna bet the aid
has brand names on it?)And it goes without saying that once the Americans
enter a region, they don'y leave. We'll find reasons to call more troops
in,and hey,I'm sure we'll uncover a couple of terrorist cells that will
require our military presence for years to come. What are their governments
going to do,refuse humanitarian aid? They'd look like dicks.A pity
too, because Malaysia had just cut itself free from the World Bank's puppet
strings. And why would America want to occupy S.E. Asia?
4.The oil.You
knew I was getting to it sooner or later. There are oil reserves in the
fairly shallow Indian ocean,in fact several oil companies were using
"sonar blasts" to try and sound out oil reserves a few weeks before the
blast(!)
5.Two days before it happened, there were mass beachings of
marine mammals all over the region. Many of them were dolphins, which do not
normally beach themselves.
Cons:
1.How did Diego Garcia protect
itself if it had foreknowledge if it's only 22 feet above sea level?Did
the whole base raise up on stilts? It probably would have taken at least a
day to put sandbags all around the base.
2.The big one:HAARP's
effectiveness. As I understand it from the limited credible information
available about HAARP,it consists of a microwave dish array that pulses
out electromagnetic radiation which then bounces off the ionosphere, and
can conceiviably be directed at certain points on the earth's surface
through triangulation. Now,I can see how that would be helpful in creating
cloud formations and maybe even hurricanes, but triggering an earthquake
would take more power than the largest nuke ever detonated directed at an
epicenter that is fairly small as far as geology goes. The pulses that
HAARP sends out are powerful, but it is power disseminated over a very
large area, and it probably can't be more accurate than a degree of
miles. The pulses that HAARP transmits conduct very well through the
atmosphere, but are stopped by just a few meters of ground. So how would it
reach a specific spot miles underground with supernuclear power?I could
even see it creating the wave itself through a stretch, but not an
earthquake. And this is all assuming that HAARP operates exactly as it was
intended, which most of DARPA's projects do not(the Osprey)I realize most
of these failed projects are hoods designed to make DARPA look kooky and
wasteful but ultimately harmless, but I was always of the impression that
the only projects we even hear about are the ones that go belly-up,i.e.
Area 51,UFOs,MKULTRA(the exception being RX-84)They make for nice
distractions. If we did somehow create this disaster,we didn't use HAARP.
Conclusion:Motive but no Means
Sidenote:The Russians do have an
array like HAARP,at least in form, and I heard talk about Aum in Japan
trying to contract it out from them.Anybody remember the story of the
"Divine Wind"?If Aum's leader really wants to convince people he's
god, that would be the way to do it.

WASHINGTON — A Navy support facility located near the
center of the Indian Ocean was spared any damage from Sunday’s devastating
ocean surges.
Officials said the Diego Garcia Navy Support
Facility, which houses about 1,700 military personnel and 1,500 civilian
contractors, suffered no damage related to Sunday’s earthquake and ensuing
tsunamis.
Personnel at the facility’s billeting office contacted
by Stars and Stripes on Monday reported no unusual activity or problems
over the weekend.
Diego Garcia, the southernmost island in the
Chagos Archipelago, sits about 1,000 miles south of India and roughly
2,000 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter.
But officials in
Somalia, whose coast is nearly 3,000 from the earthquake’s center,
reported more than 100 deaths in coastal areas as a result of tidal waves.
Carolyn Bell, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey, said
even though an earthquake like Sunday’s will radiate destructive waves in
all directions, the damage caused by the water differs greatly depending
on the undersea topography.
She speculated that the numerous coral
reefs may have dissipated some of the waves’ impact on the British-owned
island, resulting in only a slightly higher tide that residents might not
necessarily notice.
She said residents of coastal areas in
Australia reported no effects from the earthquake, even though researchers
know the sea levels there rose several feet.

I have just had a quick read of some of the comments
posted here. It is interesting that people have come to the conclusion
that the US is using the asian crisis as a means to establish themselves
in the area. It was mentioned here and elsewhere that the quake was the
equivilant of thousands of nukes.
Here is just a few facts people may
like to consider before trashing the conspiricy theorists.
The June 5,
1977, New York Times described the great earthquake which destroyed
Tangshan, China on July 28, 1976, and killed over 650,000 people.
"Just before the first tremor at 3:42 am, the sky lit up like
daylight. The multi-hued lights, mainly white and red, were seen up to 200
miles away. Leaves on many trees were burned to a crisp and growing
vegetables were scorched on one side, as if by a fireball."
Nikola
Tesla revealed that an earthquake which drew police and ambulances to the
region of his laboratory at 48 E. Houston St., New York, in 1898, was the
result of a little machine he was experimenting with at the time which
"you could put in your overcoat pocket."
The bewildered
newspapermen pounced upon this as at least one thing they could understand
and "the father of modern electricity" told what had happened as follows:
"I was experimenting with vibrations. I had one of my machines
going and I wanted to see if I could get it in tune with the vibration of
the building. I put it up notch after notch. There was a peculiar cracking
sound.
"I asked my assistants where did the sound come from. They
did not know. I put the machine up a few more notches. There was a louder
cracking sound. I knew I was approaching the vibration of the steel
building. I pushed the machine a little higher. "Suddenly all the heavy
machinery in the place was flying around. I grabbed a hammer and broke the
machine. The building would have been about our ears in another few
minutes. Outside in the street there was pandemonium.
"The police
and ambulances arrived. I told my assistants to say nothing. We told the
police it must have been an earthquake. That's all they ever knew about
it."
Some shrewd reporter asked Dr. Tesla at this point what he
would need to destroy the Empire State Building and the doctor replied:
"Vibration will do anything. It would only be necessary to step up the
vibrations of the machine to fit the natural vibration of the building and
the building would come crashing down. That's why soldiers break step
crossing a bridge."
In another interview, he boasted that, "With
this principle one could split the earth in half like an apple".
I
don't know much about the education system in the US but here in Australia
we were allways taught that Marconi was the inventor of the radio, which I
have since found out was actually Tulsa. Why are we taught untruth's ?
After Tulsa's death all his papers were taken by the US government.
Another point to note....
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A comment
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made during a Christmas Eve address to
U.S. troops in Baghdad has sparked new conspiracy theories about the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
In the speech, Rumsfeld
made a passing reference to United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in
Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to stop al Qaeda hijackers.
But in his remarks, Rumsfeld referred to the "the people who
attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over
Pennsylvania."
Rumsfelds stuff up occured on Christmas eve. What
is the best way to control the media ? Easy, create the news. One giant
sized disaster coming up. No more articles on Rumsfeld admitting they shot
down flight 93.
Truth is stranger than fiction.

There are some basic principles of physics you should try
to stretch your brains around, like conservation of energy, for one. To
produce such an effect would require an energetic input on the order of
the effect, disregarding preexisting tectonic strain. Even with that, the
required input would be incredible. So HAARP is transmitting the energy of
100+ H-bombs, huh?
Electromagnetism and magnetism are
D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T. Electromagnetism is the spectrum of photonic emissions.
Even gamma rays, the most energetic end of that spectrum, cannot penetrate
miles into the earth's crust. Besides it would need line of sight.
MAGNETIC field lines do pass through the entire earth, but to produce such
an effect from northern Canada, such a field would turn steel objects
everywhere on earth into bullets.
It's just sickening that people
believe shit like this. Chemtrails too. It says two things: 1) the U.S.
education system is a total failure 2) people are just hopelessly stupid
and civilization is doomed to crack up on the shoals of that stupidity
